Dave Turner:
What an absolutely cracking weekend my wife and myself had at the 2008
weekender. The event was exceptionally well organised, superb accomodation,
easy serve bars, good grub and a fantastic selection of traditional 60s
Northern, crossover, modern and Motown sounds played in three seperate
rooms. A quality weekend shared with quality people, what more can we ask
for.

'sister' dawn roberts:
Promised to review in full and I will now the hurt is all gone
Kez, Bella and Myself arrived here at about 4.30 pm on the friday, booked in with ease, got the keys to our 'van' and went in search of it, we eventually found it, it was in sort of a little close with other 'vans' of the same style, now when I say vans it was more like a tardis, and a luxuary tardis at that, full on comfort... ensuite to each bedroom, comfy beds, tv, freeview, stereo, fully fitted kitchen, etc etc... and Ducks!!!! first thing we did was open a few cans and sit in the midst of home from home luxary and debate wether we really wanted to go out tonight or just sit chillin in our weekender home...lol. But we did and girlies being girlies got our act together and after showers (and oh my god those showers!! lol) dressing etc we were off, to absorb what was the first ever hunstanton weekender now fondly named the hunny. We started off in the motown room to say hello to Skip and our mate Jobie (very fetching green top sweetie) Then we were off to 'case the joint'. And case it we did, finding the main room, nicely filling with arrivals all ready for a weekend of dancing and good times. Found our spot and settled into and enjoyed the beginning of what is one of the best weekenders, I have to say I have been too for a long while. Fridays nights are for saying hello to old friends and meeting new ones, and hello to everyone we met, its nice to put faces to names from cyber world, your all beautiful people. Now I dont do list of Djays and who played who or what, because like already mentioned, the jocks had a job to do and do it well they did, everyone of them, keeping the dancefloor going and to be honest I never actually witnessed it empty once all weekend. Once our legs had warmed up (that'll be the Vodka) and we found our groove it was time to hit the dancefloor,a little bit of talc made it easier on the legs, and I have to say we did our fair share and a bit more (cos did our bloody legs hurt the next day) .. if that mobility shop had been open we'd have hired three scooters Saturday morning It took a little bit of time to recover the previous 'vibe' of the dancefloor, but it did recover and the rest of the night went by in a flash, now again this had nighter written all over it, as 3 in the morning we are half way there and the zone and the grooves are good, carry it on... Sunday afternoons are were only the strong survive and there were plenty of survivors to finally dance their last dance, and say sad farewells to old and new friends, with telephone numbers and email addresses swopped, and again another fantastic music fest offered by the djays. And the very first Hunny weekender was over. So marks out of ten has to be a massive ten, for venue, bar, food, music, people, accomadation. We have booked again already for next year. No complaints at all, one suggestion for Jamie, consider a nighter as part of the weekend there were a few of us up for it. But keep it real, don't let anyone other than yourselves stamp their mark on it, cos it does what it says on the label, and thats what has made it so good. Sister Dawn x

Hunstanton Ward, as measured in the 2001 Census,. was 5685, for the last
weekend in November 2008 that number was increased to approximately 6,500 as
over eight hundred people descended upon Searls' Holiday camp and devoured
with relish a weekend of soul.
The main dish served up by Jamie trundle and his effective and efficient promotion team was ballroom room bursting at the seams with memories infused into the minds of those present by purveyors of Northern including; Steve Gutteridge, Ady Bull, Tony Dellar, Rob Smith, Smudge, Martin Topley, Karl Boddongton, Paul Massey, Skip Stuart Ian Gee and Marcus Reid. Tune after tune battering those memorial senses into life on the three sectioned dance floor, a floor filled with dancer after dancer right through 'til the wee small hours. But it didn't stop here, promoter Jamie trundle had a vision of infusing quality classic Northern with Soul of a latter vintage (from 1975 upwards) with classic club soul and Motown all in the same venue at the same time. This was achieved, and achieved to the total satisfaction of those eight hundred plus Hunstanton invaders by hiring the right dee-jays for his or her respective genre and also basing it in an appropriate three roomed venue. The above mentioned Northern Soul dee-jays (many of whom were able to multi-task and provide top tunes from the other afore mentioned genre as well) were supplemented by the likes of Reg Stickings,Chris Brown, Steve 'Jay', Kev Laws, John Bradley and Malc James. So there we have three separate rooms, one home for Northern, one for Classic and Motown and a third for the more modern side of things, and the common thread to all these rooms is the lighthearted party vibes, the non-political atmosphere tainted with nowt but the love of the many and varied genre of Soul and Northern Soul. There were many stalwarts of their chosen venue who had chosen to stay in the room which was filled by their beloved style of soul, there were others who used the event as a smaugus board of sounds dipping into each room and sampling the fantastic fares on offer and leaving satisfied from each and every one. Hunstanton now has a weekender, a weekender which, in the eyes of many there already, after but one inaugrul event is a match for the likes of Whitby et al. As if to underline this much discussed concept the winners of the Soul Quiz asked if they could swap the first prize of free tickets for the next Whitby weekender for the second prize which were tickets to the 2009 weekender in Sunny Hunny! A weekend of laughs, of humour, of soul and also a weekender to forget the pending dip in economic fortunes and dive head long into the deep pool of Soul and Northern Soul served up this late Autuminal damp but bracing weekend There was also a live act, Kenny Bernard took to the stage on Saturday night, but alas, on a personal note to my eyes he just put the breaks on an otherwise pulsating night of Northern Soul in the three dance floored main ballroom. I wasn't Kenny's fault that it failed for me, it was my own. Other than Edwin Starr (Wirrina 1975), Junior Walker, (Wirrina 1977) and Harold Melvin at Stafford (1983) I have not much liked the tempo of the night broken by a live act, but hey, I was only one of over eight hundred differing opinions, likes and dislikes Over all I echo the whispering over the weekend as some of the paying public were already saying "The Hunstanton Weekender" will be the new 'Whitby'! I'm not sure whether that's good or bad but what I do know is, over eight hundred people drinking between them selves over 55 barrells of beer (and a few bottles of something for the ladies) the Sunny Hunny weekender is already here to stay. Over two hundred People were already booking their tickets for next years' event before that last vinyl memory had stopped spinning on the last of the six turntables in this multi-roomed, expertly appointed venue. Sunny Hunny, new kid on the block? not one bit of it, 2009 will be as slick and welcoming as this years event, so book early if you want accommodation on site because it can be a chilly and wet coastal strip on occasions so the odd night in an on-site luxury caravan would but only enhance what promises already to be a top draw East Anglian Soul Weekender but it would also allow designated drivers the facility to help empty a further 55 barrells And for a pennies worth of free advice for the promoters…. "If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it."

Well done everyone,, still recovering,,
Everyone I spoke to had a GREAT time. Even the ducks loved it, Waking everybody up in the mornings. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha Spent most of the time in the main room but on Saturday, every time I walked past the Motown room I got sucked in by a memory and HAD to dance. Most of the night it was rammed but still managed to find a six inch square section of floor to lose my head in. Wonderful. Thank you Tony for squeezing a tear out of me on the Sunday session when you played "No One There" and a BIG Thank You for dedicating a record to Dave Bailey, He will appriciate the irony of "Getting Mighty Crowded" Last thanks to Maz, Paul and Reg for sharing this brilliant week-end with me, great times, great friends. We will be back next year. Del. Oxford Soul Club.

Yep Coops, top weekend and nice to see you. Sorry kept you waiting for the
photo of the winning quizzers the A Team (and of course we had to swap the
prize!!).
I was nervous about another weekender having had such a downer in Whitby and not knowing many people in that neck of the woods but I have to say all from young to old were very welcoming. The venue was very good and the B&B myself and Chris Dalton stopped in was A1 (even though I walked home from Searles at 3am on the Saturday and it was freezing) Now to the tunes. No rare stuff for me but then I didn't go expecting that but memories of Wade Flemmons and George Blackwell did it for me as proper oldies. The Quiz, seems that since I never won pass the parcel at school (Boo Hoo!!) that entering the Quiz with David Hayden, the Lovely Bridget and of course the amazing Sue Soul(X) was a pressure I felt deeply and thankfully we all managed to pull our brainpower together to perform out of the box. The ladies were so pleased and rushed up to receive the prize while David and I just played it cool of course. Apparantely the tickets (2 of) will be shared next year (I guess that means half price each) but would pay the full wack for another great weekend like that one.

Hi guys,
well what can i say. this was one of the best weekenders i have ever been to. for me it started when jamie trundell rang me up and asked if i would come along and sell some of my books.then to my amazement 2 days later he phones back to ask if i would play some of my choones on the friday night at a prime time of 10.30 till midnight. well everything was fine but i had nowhere to stay the first words dell from oxford said theres noway you are sleeping in your car, your in with us. well, what a fantastic crew we had in our chalet. as soon as the boys arrived maz starts cooking a big beef stew. these boys really know how to look after thereselves at weekenders. and i cant thank them enough for having me aboard. What made this weekender so special wasnt just the company i was keeping, it was the way the event was run. ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT. 3 rooms one dedicated to the conisseurs of northern soul. one dedicated to the sounds of motown. and last but not least one dedicated to anything goes. and this was the room i was allowed to play in. it was as if the handcuffs were taken off the dj's. all sorts of soul music was played. i even started my set with LOVE THEME by LOVE UNLIMITED ORCHESTRA. THIS EVENT IS A MUST TO PUT IN YOUR DIARIES. DO IT NOW LAST WEEKEND IN NOVEMBER. YOU WONT REGRET IT. just like to say a big thankyou to everyone concerned with the weekender. bar staff, promoters, doorman, and anyone i have missed out. and thanks to everyone who bought my book. hoipe you enjoy the read. all the best little reg

What a great weekend,nice venue,quality accomodation,superb company and top
music. The friday night i think was for acclimatisation and everyone seemed
suitably p****d,saturday afternoon was recovery time and saturday night was
for me top drawer.Fantastic atmosphere, music and organisation.I too don't go
for live acts and didn't enjoy that part of the night but this is only a
small tint on what was a thoroughly enjoyable weekend.I flitted from the
main ballroom to the modern room (didn't bother much with the motown room)
and all of the music was spot on with quality tune after quality
tune.Congratulations to Jamie and his team on a very successful event and we
have already booked for next year .

Indeed a great weekend, and not far to travel for myself. As described above
the formula worked really well, it did what it said on the tin and made for
a great party. With such detailed reviews already posted can't add a lot
just good to see everyone I knew from here and party on down to so many
great sounds.
